This evening, our very own “man in green,” Stuart P, delivered an in-depth and practical overview of trauma and trauma-related injuries, focusing on how to deal with them safely and effectively.
We began with the correct method for removing a motorcyclist’s helmet — and why you should never attempt this at an incident unless trained. Helmets must remain in place until professional help arrives, as improper removal could worsen a spinal injury. In our scenario, Stuart D played the “unfortunate motorcyclist,” while Stuart P demonstrated the safe removal technique, explaining how to account for different helmet types and minimise any movement of the patient’s head.

From there, the session moved to neck braces — how to fit them correctly, what to look for in terms of sizing, and the fact that they can be quite uncomfortable for the patient. We then explored the scoop stretcher, with a few inside tips for those “in the know” about its operation.
Finally, it was time for the spider straps. Richie bravely volunteered to be our patient, while Stuart P demonstrated how to secure a person to the scoop stretcher so they are completely immobilised. To prove just how secure the fastening was, Richie was turned upside down — still perfectly strapped in place.
